Thinking about a Shih Tzu
Shih Tzu are lively, alert, full of fun and ready to join in all the family games. They are intelligent and enjoy learning new tricks. Shih Tzu’s are most definitely ‘house dogs’ who will happily go for long walks or runs, but please remember puppies should have only short walks. They are happy to run around the garden and play with their toys.
Caring for your Shih Tzu
Regular baths are required but before bathing please gently comb or tease out any tangles they may have. After a good rub down with a towel, dry off with a hair dryer. Wiping their faces every morning with their own face flannel helps stop their faces staining. Professional grooming will be required from time to time.
Do You Want to Show?
Few, if any, knowledgable breeders will guarantee success in the show ring, except perhaps an older animal which has already proved its quality at more than one show. Experienced breeders of successful stock will be able to say with some confidence if the puppy has good show potential. It is not in their interest to have puppies of less than show quality, bred by them, in the show ring. Successful exhibitors/breeders will be able and willing to assist with much needed advice on preparing and training your puppy for the showring.
Kennel Club Breed Standards
Every dog that is registered with the Kennel Club has a breed standard in the UK and this is what a judge will look for when showing your dog. For Shih Tzu it can be found
